Who are These Players?

So as I posted yesterday, I got a pack of The Baseball Enquirer cards (pictured far left) from the Dollar Store. They clearly didn't have MLB rights, so there is no markings of teams or names of players on the cards. There are just likenesses of players.  Ten cards to a pack.  Here are the five players I am sure of:

Jose Canseco, Tommy Lasorda, Robin Yount, Will Clark, Deion Sanders.

These guys I am not sure of:
Is the guy on the top middle David Justice? I know the guy on the right in the top row is an Oriole, but who?  These cards intrigue me.

I bought some really cool Roy Halladay stuff on eBay this week, so next week's mail should be fun to get.

Congrats to Felix Hernandez, 2010 AL Cy Young award winner. If this guy was on a team with any better run support, he could have won 23 or 24 games. Well done, Felix. A bad situation turned out good for him.

  1. I think the Enquirer cards are right in the sweet spot of the Junk Wax Era, in 1992. So, that timing might help sleuth out who is who. Whole boxes of these can be had on eBay for less than ten bucks.

Of the guys you want to ID, I think the guy on the far left is Andre Dawson, given the blue uni and the Left Fielder position indicated by his cap. However, I didn't know that The Hawk had a reputation for errors. I think he has a pile of Gold Gloves, but then again, those awards are similar to (and about as meaningful) as the Nobel Peace Prize. Not necessarily the best fielder, but "most awesomest" in reputation. Maybe it should be the "Gold Pretty Cool Guy With A Glove" Award.

I'm relatively certain that the guy on the bottom left is Warren Cromartie, given the Japanese Flag on his cap (played there), and his gap-toothiness.

I think you have it right about David Justice, and I don't know what's going on with the hard hat either.

I'm still stumped on the other two guys. I agree about the Oriole, but no clue who it is. It looks like a Kangaroo on his cap, so I thought it might be an Australian born player. From that era there are two guys born there, Craig Shipley and Dave Nilsson, but neither of them played for the Orioles, ever.

The other guy looks like an Atlanta Brave, but it's unclear who that is, and the kazoo isn't helping.

  2. Thanks for your insight!

John Stephens is the Oriole from Australia, thanks to Wikipedia.

I agree with Andre Dawson, although I never realized he was a bad fielder either.

The guy on the bottom right was a member of a rock band, so says the back of the card. What band, I have no idea. I was thinking maybe Tom Glavine? But I am not sure Glavine ever had a beard, or a band. I am really stumped, but I might have to buy another pack of these because trying to figure it out is kind of fun.

  3. The Mystery 5:
    E-7 = George Bell
    Hard hat = Andres Galarraga
Kangaroo Oriole = Nobody knows (see below)
    Gap Tooth = Warren Cromartie
    Kazoo player = Jack McDowell

The Oriole player is weird, even the price guides show his name as ???. A few people theorized that it was Todd Frohwirth a while back. (http://oriolescards.blogspot.com/2008/07/1992-confex-baseball-enquirer-42.html)

Here's a checklist of the set if you pick up any more packs: http://www.baseball-cards.com/vintage-baseball-cards/1992-conex-baseball-enquirer.shtml
