What Do You Expect for A Dollar? (Cool Stuff, Actually)

*Today's post is written in PURPLE...GO RAVENS!*

I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel, and I'm doing a lot of painting this weekend, so today I stopped by the dollar store to pick up some baseball cards paint brushes.  It just so happened to be the dollar store where they have packs of 2009 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions, imagine that!  I picked up four packs and pulled some nice stuff.

The rundown is four cards per pack with one mini in each pack.  First up, Mr. Bruce:

A Gypsy Queen Black Border SP!  Bad scans (scratch is from the scanner on the first picture) but nice card to pull.

Granderson as a Tiger, Damon as a Yankee, some surfer dude, and Fukudome.  Love the surfer card of Gerry Lopez.  Part of what attracts me to this set is the uncertainty of what kind of cards you will pull.  As an example...

These are the other minis, which aren't bad--Crawford, Mauer, and Kinsler. Evelyn Ng makes an appearance too.  I love poker so it's a nice pull for me.

Finally, some ledgends:
I'm referring to Favre and Ripken.  Chuck Liddell and Dustin Pedroia book for around a buck a piece.  I have no clue what the Favre is worth (if anything), but Beckett tells me Cal Ripken 'Day' is worth around 4 bucks, while Cal Ripken "Night" books high at 25 bucks. Maybe I'm nuts, but compare the Ripken card to the Granderson or Fukudome, which clearly are Day cards.

Is this Ripken dark enough to be considered night? The answer is no, based on a quick eBay search, but it did seem a bit dark to me.  Perhaps there is a Ripken "Dusk" SP that only I pulled.  One can dream.

Here's the 'Night' SP Variation that I did not pull:

Back to the painting grind!

  3. They had Goodwin Champion packs at your dollar store? Seriously? That is awesome. I'd buy up several packs at a buck each.

  4. @Greg, yes, I'll part with the Bruce, I'll take a look at your want list and see if there is anything else I have to include. @Hackenbush, @Colbey, yeah the one dollar store near my work has tons of packs. I wasn't sure I was getting a good deal at 4 cards a pack/$1.00, but I think I am...

  5. Goodwin Champs is a good looking set - I sort of blew these off when they came out, but have really enjoyed the bargain ones when I find them.

  6. Goodwin Champions is my favorite 2009 set... I'm slowly putting together the non-baseball autograph set. I love how they feature on-card autos from a variety of sports.

The base cards are cool too... love the different backgrounds. Great bang for your buck.
