When I was a kid I used to LOVE the A's. I think it was the cool thing to do in my neighborhood back then. That said, I liked the Mets back then too (I cannot believe I admitted that, I was 8 years old or something and was clearly uninformed regarding division rivalries). I distinctly remember having my picture taken with a Mets hat on. I think about it today and it makes me sick to think I'd do such a thing. Disgraceful!
Anyway, in addition to the Mets hat I had an A's hat that I wore all the time, and the steroid whisteblower Jose Canseco was my favorite player. He was also the focus of my player collecting when I was a kid.
The A's were much better in the late 80's than they are today. As of this post they sit comfortably in last place in the AL West with a record of 42 and 54, and a cool 13 games out of first place which the Rangers hold exclusively.
Here are the results of the fanpack I sent away for from the A's...
Did you ever want to know the history of the A's elephant? Me either.
Oddball Greg Smith (who?) locally sponsored card. Thrilling!
And a pocket schedule.
ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Oh, I love the origin of the A's elephant. It's a great piece of history and I think baseball fans would all be wiser to learn the early days of the sport and the origins of the teams. Lots of intrigue and drama!
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't just a game then either - it was serious business to Mack, McGraw, Ban Johnson and the like.
BTW, I sent an email regarding the Halladay A&G card that you commented about...any update?
