Ahhh, the Diamond Giveaway. I sit at 41 rings, now just four away from that commemorative set. I have already taken delivery of a few Topps Diamond Giveaway cards--two diamond die cut Phillies, Roy Halladay and Carlos Ruiz. But what I unlocked for my 41st card might have prompted me to take delivery again.
Check it out:
I know, I know, it's a New York Giant, but still. A 1952 Topps card would be nice to throw into the collection. Beckett has this card priced between 20 and 40 bucks. Not that I'd sell it, I don't think. I might try to trade it for a 1952 Phillies card before I do anything, though.
Here's the back:
This would be in the top 5 oldest cards in my collection, joining my 1909 T206 Rube Oldring "fielding" card and a 1951 Bowman Harry Lowry that is in pretty bad shape. I'll let you all know what I decide to do when I actually decide. Regardless, I think I will definitely go for those last four code cards at this point. Maybe I will unlock something else cool to go along with the delivery of this if I decide to do it.
A fear I have is that the card will arrive super beat up. I recall reading on someone's blog (sorry, I cannot remember which one), that Topps sent some pretty creased vintage when they took delivery. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has experienced this, or if the vintage turned out to be decent. Not that I am expecting to receive a mint condition 1952 card, but I also don't want something horrible.
The '56 Stu Miller I got was very sharp. The '67 Ralph Terry, not so much. It's really kinda luck of the draw with the older stuff.
ReplyDeleteWhat he said^^. I took delivery of my cards too and the vintage stuff was in pretty decent condition. Nothing beat but nothing perfect. Pretty much what you may expect to see at shows. Well, at least in my experience. I say take delivery! Any time you can get a 1952 Topps cheap, you have to jump on it.
ReplyDeleteI just ordered and received my '52 Topps card from the giveaway site. It was well-handled and had a small pen scribble on the player's uniform. But I have no problem with that with a '52 Topps card.
ReplyDeleteHere's a look at it if you want:

The '52 I got last year was in really good shape. Better shape than all the other vintage cards I got in fact. I'd order it without hesitation. Even in bad shape, it's still from an iconic set. If you really don't want it, I'll trade you something on the site for it, but it would be nice for your collection.
