This Can't Be For Real...Can It? And a Poll!

This afternoon in taking a break from sorting cards and getting my for trade page updated, I searched for Jeremy Lin cards on eBay, just to see how much they were out of control priced.  Low and behold, it's worse than the Harper and Strasburg over price craze last year and the year before.  Do you guys remember the buyer who paid upwards of $16,000 for the Strasburg red Superfractor?  The same article also featured the 1/1 red auto parallel that sold for $17,000.  These days Strasburg's highest value card sells for way under $5,000.  There is an auction right now on eBay for just over $10,000.  It doesn't look to be garnering that much interest.

Well, Jeremy Lin has a card that is now on auction at a bid-up price of $18,850 with four days left.  This is the card in the auction:
It is a sweet patch /25 and yes, it is graded and autographed, but damn is that a lot of money to pay for a trading card of someone who has only played a few NBA games.  Lin continues to roll on, having beaten the Mavs today with a decent performance, but as Strasburg proved athletes are only one injury away from their card values plummeting.  I hope the buyer of this card and others like it have the sense to turn it around very quickly if the goal is to make a profit.  Or maybe they are just super rich and it doesn't matter anyway.

Time for another poll!  This craziness has me thinking: what is the most you have ever spent on an individual trading card?  Mine is no more than $40 (and that was painful) for a Halladay 1/1 and a Halladay/Lee Triple Threads dual relic.  What say you?

  1. I believe $15 is the most I've ever paid for a single card. Two of them, roughly 15 bucks each, for two Josh Willingham Autographed Letters /5.

  2. I think I paid around $100 for a 2005 UD Past Time Pennants dual on card auto of Ron Santo and Billy Williams numbered 10/15. Santo super collector Nathan (aka tyweb1 on Ebay)recently had #15/15 up for auction for $125 but it didn't sell. I overpaid for a bunch of Santos bidding against that guy some years ago.

  3. Just last year I paid close to $80 for a Tim Hudson 2011 Topps Marquee Museum Collection auto #d 4/10. I still can't believe I paid that much, but it is a dang sexy card.

  4. I don't think I've ever paid more than a couple dollars for a single card.

  5. I've managed to spend over $50 on a card a number of times, and I've even cleared the $100 mark on a few special occasions -- the most recent of which being when I picked up the 2005 Donruss Signature Series HOF Quad Autograph #HOF-72, Mike Schmidt, Robin Roberts, Jim Bunning, & Steve Carlton. You can see the card on my sight at: http://14kphillies.wordpress.com/2012/01/30/2012-01-30-phillie-filler-of-the-day/
