And we have come to the end of my 2006 Upper Deck Future Stars hobby box break. As advertised on the box, there are an average of five autographs per hobby box. I was hoping to reach that number, or exceed it. I did reach it...sort of.
First, the autos are really cool looking , because they are on clear PTEG, and they are see through.
The first auto I pulled was Eric Reed, of the Marlins. Taken in the 9th round of the 2002 Amateur draft, Reed played two whole season in the majors. He finished with a .098 batting average.Next out of the box was a heart breaker. It is hard to read (I guess due to the age of the box, or the printing ink used?) but the above card is a Martin Prado auto redemption that expired in March of 2010. Ugh! This is the sort of risk you take when buying older hobby boxes, though. I was going to send this card to Derek over at Tomahawk Chopping, but I don't think they will send it to me. I am going to try to email Upper Deck and see if they will do anything, but I am not holding my breath.
The next hit was pretty cool, considering recent events. Nelson Cruz had a hell of a World Series, so I was pretty stoked to pull his auto, and a rookie card at that.
Accardo played for the Orioles last season. He was drafted by the Giants in 2003, and as the card showed, he also played for the Blue Jays.
Finally, here is a Nate McLouth red ink auto. Apparently the red ink autos are rare, and limited to /35. The thing is, there is no serial number on the card so I am not sure if that is true or not. The hobby box tells me so, however.
I am glad to be done with this box! I was so disappointed with the billion duplicates and triplicates I got that I was hoping something would make up for it. That did not turn out to be the case. These cards are available, if you are interested. On to 2012 pack ripping, as soon as I can make it to a store to find some packs. I must have that squirrel card.
Thanks for reading!
I did a group break with this product and had the Pirates. My McLouth is a red ink version too. I'm not sure Nate got the memo about how many he was supposed to sign in red ink.
ReplyDeleteWAIT! you want the squirrel card didn't he sink your Phils! maybe it will look good on the dart board!!!! lol
ReplyDeleteThe squirrel did sink the Phils...or lack of offense sunk the Phils :-). I just think the squirrel card is so funny. I laugh every time I see it so I kind of want one!
Deletein the immortal words of Doug, - "SQUIRREL!!"
ReplyDeleteI'd trade for the Accardo auto.
ReplyDeleteI'll hold it for you, Ted!
Deletedawgbones - Dug: Hey, I know a joke! A squirrel walks up to a tree and says, "I forgot to store acorns for the winter and now I am dead." Ha! It is funny because the squirrel gets dead.
ReplyDeleteI've got a McLouth red ink auto too so that accounts for at least 3 of the 35! Bummer about the Prado auto card. I didn't even know he was in that set. Let us know what UD tells you regarding the redemption.
ReplyDeleteRight...the odds that you, Kyle, and I have 3 out of only 35 McLouth autos is pretty slim, haha. I guess he just didn't get the memo to sign only 35 in red ink!
DeleteI didn't know Nelson Cruz was in that set! I like it!
