Well, This Isn't Going So Well

So, did you hear?  Michael Martinez, a utility infielder on the Phillies, broke his foot after being hit by a pitch today.  Usually this would be no big deal, but let's take a look at a few things, shall we?

RF: Hunter Pence
CF: Shane Victorino
C: Carlos Ruiz
SS: Jimmy Rollins, when healthy.  But who when he isn't?
LF: ??? Mayberry? Brown?
3rd Base: Polanco, when healthy.  But who when he isn't?
2nd Base: ??? Freddy Galvis (untested, rookie)
1st Base: ???  Jim Thome? Ty Wigginton? Mayberry?

There are way too many questions and not many options on this aging team. I know that it sounds cliche, the Phillies are getting older, blah, blah, blah, but it's very true.

And it makes this fan really nervous.

The current injuries go something like this.  Ryan Howard and his messed up, infected, horrible Achilles tendon issue will keep him out until at least the end of May. Probably longer.  Chase Utley has chronic knee problems in both knees.  He hasn't seen one inning of Spring Training action, and he left Clearwater to be seen by a knee specialist.  He won't be ready for opening day, and probably won't be ready for the entire month of April and beyond.  Placido Polanco hurt his ring finger diving back into a base and has been out the past three days or so.  Domonic Brown has been out with neck stiffness (suffered from when he fell asleep wrong on the team bus).  This team is totally banged up when they cannot afford to be.

Don't get me wrong, our pitching staff will keep us in every game, but it's a really unsettling feeling when the entire infield is on the verge of or has injuries.

Maybe I am just panicking, but that's what we do as fans, right?
