In the Mail..and The Spectrum

If you'll humor me for a minute, let me start this post by paying homage to The Spectrum, a staple in Philadelphia for as long as I've been alive, and then some--1967-2009.  I don't remember the sports area in Philadelphia without it.  That's why I felt compelled to watch the ceremony live online, and watch the wrecking ball strike the bricks of this historic building.  So many great events happened there: championships, NCAA buzzer beaters, Flyers, Sixers, Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elvis, The Grateful Dead (played there 50 times), WWF shows, I could go on and on. My memories of the building will always be fond, and inherently "Philadelphia."

Anyway, on to baseball card talk...

I got two cards in the mail yesterday. First up, a pretty rare 2000 Sports Illustrated (presented by Fleer) Roy Halladay card, along with two other Blue Jays players, the memorable Tom Evans and Kevin Witt. The card is pretty ugly, and the guy in the middle (Tom Evans) looks less than thrilled.  What is the point of the white lights over their heads?  Plus, the "2000" graphic is way too big.  Even Roy looks weird in the face.  I got the card on eBay for .99, and it's just another notch in the collection for me.

The next card I got in the mail yesterday is really nice.  It's a 2008 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts- Generations- Dual game used jersey card # GEN-PH, with Roy Halladay and Gaylord Perry.  Check it out:

Something that stood out for me right away was the jersey swatch for Gaylord Perry. It's defininely different material than Roy's more modern swatch.  It looks heavier because it probably was.  It almost looks like wool, and it is very textured.  I got the card for only $1.49, which to me was a really good price for a dual game used jersey card of two super-star players.  It's currently my favorite Halladay Collection jersey card, although I only have a few right now.

I'll have more In the Mail posts in the coming days, and maybe even today again.  I am expecting lots of stuff through snail mail.
