We all know they're for card companies, too. Last week I bought a value pack of random old packs, and one of them was 2007 Topps Opening Day. I was stoked when I opened the pack and the first card I saw was a Roy Halladay gold foil. Another Roy to add to my growing collection. I didn't think much of it and set the card aside to catalog later, and opened the other packs which were really uneventful. But then I went to catalog the card and put it in my Halladay binder and noticed something wasn't quite right. Here's the front of the card (cut off by my scanner, I am too lazy to fix it):
And then here's the back of the card:
I had to look twice...the info at the bottom is about Joe Nathan. Funny how Topps made the error on the guy who would go on to throw a perfect game. Imperfection vs. Perfection. I doubt it is worth much more than a normal Opening Day card is worth (aka close to nothing), but I am pretty sure it is the first error card I have pulled from a pack. Now if I could just pull the no name Frank Thomas from the 1990 Topps set that books for around $400...
Pulling this card made me think of a card I was talked into buying as a kid from the guy at the local card shop back then. I was pretty gullible and if someone told me to buy a card that might pay for my college tuition one day, I went ahead and got it.
I went to my cards in a toploader storage box and dug this out:
A 1988 Topps Al Leiter Future Stars card. Above is the correct card.
And here is the card that was marked "error." Looking at it now, I am not sure I know what the error is? Yes, the cards look different and have Al Leiter's name The guy told me they were two different players on the cards under the same name, but taking a really close look now they look like they can be the same guy, just a different background and pose. I checked Beckett and not surprisingly the card isn't listed. Does anyone else have these cards?
The error card is a picture of Al Leiter's lesser older brother Mark Leiter, who was also in the Yankees system at the time. I think I have these somewhere, but I'd have to search hard.
ReplyDeleteSo that's why they look so much alike! Thanks for clarifying :-)
ReplyDeleteCard Investor is correct, I have both these cards. Sorry to say niether will pay for even a notebook you need for college.
ReplyDeleteActually, the info on the back of the Halladay card is about Joe Nathan.
ReplyDeleteI stand corrected. I read Joe and Twins and my mind went to Mauer. But Mauer wouldn't have saves, of course!
ReplyDeleteI remember when the Leiter card came out and it was hot. If I'm not mistaken the pic is actually of a little known guy named Steve George.
