A few weeks ago I sent Colbey over at Cardboard Collections a whole bunch of batting pitchers for his batting pitcher card collection. This brought me to an observation: did you ever realize just how many baseball cards are out there of pitchers who are batting, and/or have a bat in their hands, or a batting helmet on, or are on base? It was really astounding to me when I started looking specifically for these cards, and found so many. The kicker for me are the American League pitchers who are batting or are on base, etc. Take for example this Andy Pettitte relic I pulled out of a T-206 box:
I mean, I guess Andy had a few at bats in interleague play this year, or the bat was taken from his days with the Astros maybe. I don't know. Either way, if you think about it, it seems kind of odd. Still, an interesting aspect of cards that I definitely notice now.
Although I didn't ask for or expect anything in return, Colbey sent me a ton of really awesome Phillies cards for my team collection. He sent me a lot more than this, but here are some examples.
Platinum Chase in his classic pose. I don't remember Lou Marson as a Phillie. He is now an Indian, and was part of the Cliff Lee trade in 2009. The back of the card proves his stellar stats in 2008. I mean, the guy hit .500 that year! Ok, so he only had four at bats, but two hits in them. By the way, this all happened in the last game of the 2008 season. And as I was watching Astro Michael Bourn steal base after base after base against teams last year, I couldn't help but think how it would have been if he'd stayed a Phillie. Dude is FAST.
Cole Hamels looks like he is 12 in this picture. This is a Your Momma card, in case you were wondering. ZOMG! a Roy Halladay patch card! I love it. Helped my Roy card total, which now stands at 192.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see this Richie Ashburn patch card in the package. It's my first Ashburn and a welcome addition to the collection. Sweet! A Lenny Dykstra 1996 Topps Laser. Up until I got this card I had never heard of or seen a Topps Laser card. I think this was produced during a very long hiatus I had with collecting. Awesome card, and I have decided I must have more...
Thanks again Colbey! I look forward to more trades in the future.
So every time I look at the Laser card it makes me think of Austin Powers, "Frickin' sharks with laser beams on their heads."
Happy New Year everyone!
What better way to start off 2011 by WINNING A BOX OF 2010 BOWMAN CHROME???
