This Made Me Think a Bit

A 2005 Topps Jack McKeon base card.  Do you notice what I noticed first?  Well I mean it's kind of obvious what the odd thing about this card is.  McKeon is smoking a cigar.  No big deal to me, but I think I was just surprised to see that based on all the anti-smoking messages out there for kids.  Cards are still marketed towards kids, right?  I guess that makes me a big kid, but that's not such a bad thing.

Interesting choice by Topps to use this photo when they probably had several to choose from.

A far cry from the cards of the past, but this is a hundred plus years later.

Thoughts?

  1. I work with the National MS Society in Greensboro NC and Jack lives in Elon NC about 20 minutes away. We hosted a dinner in Alamance County where he lives and he was our speaker. We actually presented him with a very nice Cigar as one of our thank you's to him. He has been featured in aficionado magazine and doesn't go anywhere with out his Cigar. The Cigar is ole Jack's trademark.

  3. I think they go a little overboard with the sting on tobacco advertising and such. It's not like this is the first time kids would have ever seen a cigar.

Plus, when is the last time any kid wanted to emulate a manager. Now if it was Jeter or Pujols it would be different, because kids look up to them. This is just an older gentleman who isn't going to change his ways.
