Have you ever heard of Five Below? True to its name, everything there is $5.00 and under, including the baseball cards. They usually have a small selection of cards to choose from, including rack packs-I've bought a bunch of 2010 Topps Series 2 and Update from there for $4.99 (the usual price). They also have blasters for $5.00. "Super Value Blasters."
Word to the wise: you get what you pay for, but I fully expected that.
So these blasters are $5.00, and they come with 150 cards and a complete team set, and one unopened pack. Can you guess what that pack was? I should be no surprise...
However it did yield some decent cards:
Also in the box was a team set:
A 2008 Red Sox team set. Does anyone want it? I'll throw it in as part of a trade! The box isn't in the best condition, but the cards are fine.
Also included in the box were:
Over 100 1989 Topps junk wax era cards! That makes nearly 2,534 (an estimate haha) 1989 Topps cards I now own.
Lastly there was a box of loose cards. Perhaps it holds some promise?
The suspense is terrible, right?
More junk wax, but at least some of it was interesting junk wax:
Inky, the Kruker, and Wild Thing
But wait! There's more!
Some K-Mart Boggs and Doc Gooden, and an '86 Wally Joyner.
Even more Red Sox cards. Two Mannys:
The value of cards from the junk wax era is so low due to overproduction, right? I haven't researched it much but that is the impression I get from what I have read. Do you guys remember Howard Johnson?, aka Ho Jo? You know, former Tiger, Met and a co-winner of a rib-eating contest among professional athletes after the 1985 season (true story)? Well the makers of the Super Value Box wanted to make sure Ho Jo was not forgotten. This box contained, one after another, not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE 1987 Howard Johnson cards. Overproduction, or just plain awesomeness?
Part of me wants to go buy more Super Value boxes just to see how many Ho Jos I can rack up! I've decided to have some fun with it. Now since I have five of them every time I'm going though cards and I find one, I'm going to add it to my 1987 Ho Jo collection. Why? Clearly the card collecting gods want me to.
Anyone I trade with, feel free to throw some 1987 Ho Jos in with my trade packages. Can't wait to see how many I get!!!
Awesome! Kruk and Incaviglia rookies! Are you in 1993 heaven or what?
ReplyDeleteI know, I was brought back to the past with those cards. Kruk was so thin too! My how times changed...
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know who puts these things together. I have about 45000 cards I'd sell them for a real good price.
